This is the gaming blog of Wan Kong Yew. I’m a Malaysian national currently based in Kota Kinabalu. My original blog is still at calltoreason.org. This blog will cover only my gaming hobbies which at the moment includes boardgames and PC games. I expect that eventually I will join the console gaming crowd as well but I don’t actually own a console system at the moment except for a PSP which is pretty much on permanent Monster Hunter duty.

I’ve always thought of myself as a gamer and have fond memories of playing early games like Asteroids, Missile Command and Space Invaders on the Atari 2600 and  Karateka, King’s Quest and Conan: Hall of Volta on 8086/8088 systems. At the same time, I discovered a copy of Lone Wolf: Flight from the Dark in the library of my primary school and soon worked my way through the entire series, including the Grey Star the Wizard spin-off miniseries.

I’ve never stopped playing PC games and though I generally dislike “Best of” lists, some of my all-time favorites include Planescape: Torment, Alpha Centauri, UFO: Enemy Unknown and Frontier: First Encounters. More recent games that have impressed me are Bioshock, Fall from Heaven 2, Race Driver: Grid and Fallout 3. Note that this is by no means an exhaustive list. With the notable exception of sports-based games, I pretty much play all genres of video games.

Lately, I’ve also taken up playing boardgames as well. It’s something I’ve been interested in ever since my first forays into paper-and-pencil role-playing games, but I’ve only just had the chance to really get into the hobby. I’m still too much of a newcomer to boardgames to have too much of an opinion without sounding like a total idiot but so far, much to my surprise, I leaning towards the cerebral Euro-style games rather than the theme-heavy American ones. Time will tell on that score.
